Replacing Retiring Baby Boomers: Next Generation Companies

A number of companies that are top-heavy with Baby Boomers considering early retirement are beginning to worry. In a recent Finance Headline, we explained how many Baby Boomers plan to retire early in large numbers. For many companies, that means they could soon be faced with a severe lack of senior-level managers and people with a deep knowledge of their business. So what can a business stacked with Baby Boomers planning to retire early do to prepare?

Focus on the Next Generation of Your Business: Promoting from Within

Focus on the next generation of your company by working with existing employees. Long before employees reach retirement age, there should be a plan in place to shore up employee ranks and to replace the Baby Boomers retiring early. Companies need to take a closer look at their mid-level management team to see whom they have on staff to replace people who will retire. Set up a mentoring program to begin grooming the next generation management team. Begin imparting more and more important information to your mid-level managers, allowing them to become engaged in company profitability.

Looking Outside of Your Company to Hire New Talent

You may need to look outside of your company to hire new talent. Make sure that you or your recruiters have an avenue for finding and retaining the employees you need to keep your business running smoothly. Work with employees to develop a model for employees skill sets needed before you try to hire new talent. Before your Baby Boomer employees retire early, they should be working to transfer their knowledge to the next generation business managers hired or promoted.

Track expenses when hiring new talent with a business credit card. A credit card designed for business allows you to see exactly how much you’re spending on your next generation management team. Before you apply, read online customer credit card reviews to get more information about business credit cards.
