Fans avidly watched Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison’s celebrity divorce unfold in tabloids and entertainment magazines. The couple married on March 14, 1983 after Ford divorced his first wife, Mary Marquardt, in 1979. Melissa Mathison wrote screenplays for a series of blockbuster films including The Black Stallion and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Ford had been in some movies when the couple married, but his career took off in the 90’s when he started raking in more than $20 million- plus a piece of the box office profits- for his movie roles.

The 2004 celebrity divorce was particularly lucrative because in addition to the divorce settlement, Ford has to continue to pay Mathison a portion of any future earnings on the movies he made while they were together. These include the Indiana Jones movies and The Fugitive DVD sales. The settlement that Mathison received is in the $118 million dollar neighborhood. And her additional earnings are unlimited because the movies are still popular and will continue to sell into infinity, probably.

Elvis Presley’s earnings once again top the Forbes’ dead celebrities list, according to news reports. The singer’s estate had fallen out of first place for the first time in years when a portion of Kurt Cobain’s song catalog were sold by his widow, Courtney Love last year. However, Elvis’ earnings are once again leading the pack with estimated earnings of $49 million. So how does Elvis’ estate still make him the King 30 years after his death?

The celebrity’s earnings increased in part due to the changes that happened at Graceland this year. Graceland, Elvis Presley’s Memphis, Tennessee home, continues to be a major tourist attraction for fans. Graceland’s overhaul included extensive renovations to the star’s home, a new hotel convention center and a new advertising campaign to garner more public interest in visiting the mansion- and so far, it’s working.

A new VIP tour of Graceland was also recently introduced, helping to bump up visitor attendance. The VIP Graceland tour includes touring the mansion and grounds, Elvis Presley’s automobile museum, his two custom airplanes and two additional exhibits, the Sincerely Elvis Museum and Elvis After Dark. The VIP Graceland tour also includes front of line access, an all-day ticket and a number of other perks for adoring fans.

Aggressive licensing of Elvis’ image and name, song lyrics and images of Graceland also help keep the King at the top of the dead celebrities’ heap. Only a fool would use the images without permission, as the estate rigorously watchdogs unauthorized use. And of course, earnings from the sale of Elvis Presley’s music and movies continue to add more money to the coffers, too.

Paul McCartney-Heather Mills-Celebrity Divorce

The celebrity divorce (still pending) between Paul McCartney and Heather Mills continues to provide us with titillating tabloid headlines. Mills and McCartney married on June 11, 2002. By 2006, the couple had split. And this celebrity divorce has not been pretty: Mills has claimed McCartney hurt her; McCartney famously locked her out of their house, and her security guard’s (successful) attempts to scale the wall made worldwide headlines.

Heather Mills was all set to receive $100 million of Paul McCartney’s $700 million dollar fortune in one of the nastiest celebrity divorces- and the most expensive- of all time. Unfortunately for her, Mills may have messed up her chances of getting a fat settlement. Heather Mills continues to let things slip out on television about the marriage and the “cute Beatle” continues to get angrier and angrier. The latest report states that McCartney has slashed his original settlement offer of $100 million to $14 million in a fit of pique after Mills blamed him for their split on TV. On a side note, the couple hired lawyers from the same firms that represented Princess Diana and Prince Charles to represent them during their celebrity divorce.
