Notebook Safety Tips to Protect Your Personal and Financial Information

Protect your financial and personal information by keeping your notebook safe. In addition to the old worry that someone might steal your laptop computer, we have a new concern today. Identity thieves look for notebooks to steal to gain access to your personal and financial information. How you can keep your laptop safe:

Don’t leave your notebook unattended to keep it safe from theft. This is especially difficult in coffeehouses and in some business situations. You may feel silly picking up your laptop and carrying it with you every time you have to excuse yourself, but it’s critical if you want to keep your notebook safe. Airports, hotel rooms and parked cars especially are targets for thieves.

Lock your notebook with a special cable that ties it down so it can’t be stolen. You may have seen these in airports. They make the notebook too heavy to move or at least difficult enough to draw unwanted attention to the identity thief who tries to steal your laptop.

Don’t keep passwords with your notebook. If your laptop is stolen, the identity thieves won’t be able to access your personal and financial information if they don’t have your passwords.

Laptop security systems can help find your notebook if it’s stolen. The software notifies you when the laptop connects to the internet and gives you the location of the notebook, too.
