Cleaning Up Your Credit Report to Improve Your Credit Score
Posted by: Allie P. | Jan 08,2008
When you order your free credit report each year, make sure you check for mistakes. Inaccuracies in your credit report can affect your credit score negatively. A friend’s father just ordered his credit report and found it included a lot of information about his kids’ activities. The credit history included his kids’ addresses as if they were his own, and there were other incorrect pieces of information too. What you should know about cleaning up mistakes found on your credit report:
There can be inaccuracies from credit bureau to credit bureau that impact your credit score. A company may only order credit reports or credit scores from one credit bureau. So if you’ve paid off a line of credit and it doesn’t show on all of your credit reports, only the credit bureaus that have accurate information will show your real credit history.
If you find mistakes in any of your credit reports that need to be cleaned up, immediately notify the appropriate credit bureau. They have 30 days to respond to reports of inaccuracies in your credit history. If you’re currently in the process of applying for a loan, let your lender know about the issue right away, and that you are working to clean up the problem.
