Bumped Airline Passengers Get Refunds on Prop Planes
Posted by: Lisa N. | Apr 22,2008
Getting “bumped” or kicked off a flight isn’t uncommon. In fact, with airlines going bankrupt and the other airlines that are still flying cutting way back on their flight schedules, getting bumped when you travel is a real possibility.
In the past, smaller prop planes, often called commuter planes, were overbooked because airlines didn’t have to refund customers for getting bumped. However, a new change means that any time you fly on a plane with more than 29 passengers and you get bumped, you can get a refund. The maximum amount paid is $800 but varies according to how much you paid for your ticket.
Passengers who “non-rev,” or fly for free because they or a friend or family member works for an airline, will still get bumped without any refund. If you plan to non-rev it anywhere, make sure that you have a back-up plan that includes the cost of a hotel, in case you get stranded.
Save every time you book a flight when you use an airline card or a rewards credit card to make your reservations. The cards offer points for purchases that you make using the cards and often offer double points for booking airline travel online.
