Work from Home and Online Business Opportunity Scams

Work from home and online business opportunities sound great, unless they’re scams. If you’re trying to make some extra money to pay off your credit card debt, or want to switch jobs or careers, you’re probably looking online for business opportunities. I’m sure you’ve seen the paid ads for work from home and own your own business opportunities on websites and in Internet search results. They usually look something like this:

Exclusive opportunity! Work from home and make six figures in six months! Make more than your doctor makes! And of course, my personal favorite, “Be your own boss!”

Before you sign up for a work from home or online business opportunity, make sure it’s not a scam:

  • Check out references and talk to other people before you invest in any business opportunity.
  • Look online to see if the company is panned in online forums or if complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Read contracts, agreements and documents for the online business opportunity carefully before you sign. It’s always recommended that you have an attorney review applicable paperwork before you invest any money in a new business venture.
  • Get agreements and promises in writing before you commit to a work at home or online business opportunity.

You can also order a business credit report on companies you want to work with to get more information on their background. A business credit report provides more information about the company including information about debts, liens and bankruptcies.
