Scams in the News this Week
Posted by: Desiree B. | Dec 25,2007
Jeepers, I take a few days off from researching the latest scams in the news for you and now they’re just piled up. This is one scam in the news this week that immediately caught my eye:
Is it just me, or do scams against the elderly make your blood boil, too? This week, a home improvement scam was reported to DeFuniak Springs, Florida police. Two women pushed their way into an elderly woman’s home under the premise of selling her some linoleum. Then, while one man kept her occupied, the other one ransacked her home, grrr, grrr. The local police are warning people in the community to be wary of anyone who wants to gain entrance to your home.
Scammers will use any excuse to get inside your home, stating they need to use the phone or that they are home improvement experts or they will use some other random excuse to gain entry into your house. Often there will be two people, one who talks a good game and one who either steals valuables or looks for bank or credit card statements to steal.
If someone appears on your porch asking for help, tell them to hold on and you will call the police for them. In a real emergency, the police can help, and if it’s a scam, they’ll clear off your porch as soon as you shut the door. If they say they want to give you a quote for home improvement repairs, ask them to leave a card and end the conversation immediately. Report attempted scams to your local police department.
