More Credit Counseling Tips: Interviewing Your Credit Debt Counselor
Posted by: Desiree B. | Dec 21,2007
Yesterday we introduced the concept of interviewing your credit debt counselor before you decide on a credit counseling service. In addition to getting information about all credit counseling fees in writing, inquiring about free educational materials and classes and plans for your future, there are still some questions you must ask prospective credit debt counselors before deciding on the right one for you:
Do I have to sign a contract for credit counseling services? Perhaps, but make sure you review the entire document before you sign. And in addition to telling a prospective credit debt counselor that you need to see all fees in writing, ask them to include any other assurances about reducing and eliminating your debt in writing too.
How are credit counseling services employees compensated for their work? Is their compensation commission-based? Do they make additional monies if I sign up for more services? If they do, you’ll want to find another credit debt counselor.
Is the credit counselor licensed to provide credit debt services in my state? What kinds of certification do they have? How much training have they received? A reputable credit debit counselor will have appropriate experience, training and accreditation.
We’ll wrap up credit counseling interview tips on the blog tomorrow.
