Merchants Avoid Debit Card and PIN pad Scams with Safety Tips from Police
Posted by: Desiree B. | Dec 16,2007
PIN pad scams have popped up in the news a lot lately. Accepting credit and debit cards is a must if you run a retail or grocery store, because consumers want the convenience of using plastic. If you own a business and you use a PIN pad, how can you keep your customers safe from debit card scams? The Victoria, B.C. police have recently been investigating a number of PIN pad scams and have some advice to help you keep your customers safe when you use a PIN pad to run debit card transactions:
Check the PIN pad every day, looking for signs of tampering. If anything looks out of place, or if it looks roughed up, someone may have altered your PIN pad.
Watch the area around the cash register at all times. The debit card scammers will try to distract you while they switch your PIN pad machine with their debit card machine.
Help keep customer transactions safe by placing labels on your PIN pad machines. That way, if they are tampered with, your staff will know immediately. In addition, just the simple addition of a sticker can deter the crooks who want to perpetrate a debit card scam.
If you suspect that you’ve been a victim of a PIN pad scam, immediately notify the police.
