IRS Warns Taxpayers about New Identity Theft Scams

Identity theft scams in the news this week include more emails claiming to be from the IRS:
An email claiming to be from the IRS tells recipients that they can make a quick $80 for completing a survey. The IRS has not sent out any customer surveys recently. And the IRS continues to maintain that they never contact people through email with requests to do anything.
Phishing emails include links and if you click on them, you can download potentially harmful spyware to your computer. In addition, they try to collect personal or financial information with links that go to phony websites.
The IRS investigates phishing scams and posts warnings about emails to avoid on the IRS website. If you receive any suspicious emails that state they are from the IRS, forward it to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . The IRS has collected thousands of emails related to phishing scams and works closely with other entities, include internet service providers, to eradicate the phony websites.
If you’re worried that you may owe money to the IRS, or you have received an email that you think is legitimate and you want to respond, contact the local customer service office for the IRS in your area before you do anything.
