Identity Theft Scams in the News
Posted by: Desiree B. | Jan 12,2008
Identity theft scams continue to be a problem in the New Year:
Senior citizens in Indiana are receiving phone calls stating that they can get a free Medicare card. The catch? They just have to provide their banking information to the caller. These dastardly criminals won’t take no for an answer, calling the hapless elderly back repeatedly and harassing them to sign up for the product.
If you receive any unwanted phone calls, tell the caller not to call you anymore or you will file a police report. Then, contact your phone company to file a complaint. Let them know you’ve asked the caller to stop calling you and that they are trying to get your personal or financial information. Block the calls if you can, and file a police report if they refuse to stop calling.
Like we keep saying on the blog, ignore phony-sounding phone calls asking for information and spam email that arrives in your inbox. Especially ignore junk email that promises you can make money for doing nothing or that wants you to click on a link to provide financial information. Clicking on links may cause Trojan software to download, corrupting the safety of your computer.
