Homeowner’s Scams in the News: Door to Door Magazine Subscription Sales
Posted by: Desiree B. | Dec 28,2007
A spate of complaints has been received by the Better Business Bureau regarding door to door magazine sales. The magazine subscription salespeople tell homeowners that the money will help them with college. This is one of the oldest homeowner’s scams on record. I have a couple of friends who ordered magazine subscriptions from door to door salespeople and never received anything. What you need to know about this homeowner’s scam:
The Better Business Bureau warns that before you give door to door salespeople money, or invite them into your home, you should get the name and address of the company that hired the salesperson. If they cannot provide this information, feel free to tell them “thanks, but no thanks.”
Be wary of magazine subscriptions salespeople who don’t tell you the total price of the subscription, warns the Federal Trade Commission. A few dollars a week or a one-time processing fee may sound like a great deal. But if you’re paying a few dollars a week for years or a large fee to get a “free” subscription, you may be getting ripped off.
If you’ve been the victim of a door to door sales scam, contact the police and your state’s Attorney General. Your experience can help them investigate and possibly prosecute the scammers.
