Don’t Risk Everything: Get Protection with Renter’s Insurance

The news is filled with horror stories about people who lost everything and weren’t protected by renter’s insurance. Renter’s insurance is similar to homeowner’s insurance. The policy protects your personal belongings when you rent an apartment. What you need to know about renter’s insurance:
- If you can’t afford to replace the items in your apartment, then buying renter’s insurance is probably a good idea. Coverage is fairly inexpensive, usually costing less than $150 annually, and often buying a renter’s insurance policy online costs much less.
- Many apartment complexes require that you purchase renter’s insurance. You’ll have to show proof of insurance at the time you sign your lease.
- The renter’s insurance policy won’t protect you if you own an apartment building. Landlord’s insurance is another type of insurance policy.
- Buying renter’s insurance provides you with coverage even if you aren’t at home. And, you also get some coverage for personal property that’s outside of the apartment too.
- Earthquakes and floods are generally not covered by the renter’s insurance policy. If you live in an area that’s prone to floods or earthquakes, you may be eligible for some insurance through your state. Contact your insurance agent or state department of insurance for more details.
