Credit Nightmares: E-Greeting Card Scams
Posted by: Desiree B. | Jan 02,2008
One of the fastest-growing internet scams is the e-greeting card scam. I get online greeting cards sent to me all the time by friends and family. So I was surprised the first time I received one and it didn’t show the name of the person who sent it to me. I didn’t click on the links in the email (there were several), and I did a little research and found out that it was probably a scam email.
If you click on a link in a phony e-greeting card, you could risk downloading potentially harmful software to your PC. You may also be giving a scammer access to your computer, compromising your personal and financial information.
E-greeting cards should display the name of the person who sent you the card. If you don’t recognize the name of the person who is sending you the card, or if the sender’s name isn’t listed, delete the email.
If an email about an e-greeting card looks real (and they get more sophisticated all the time), I look carefully at the website name in the link. It usually looks phony, and far too long to be a normal website. Typos and not including your name in the email are also surefire signs that you’re looking at spam.
If you accidentally click on a link in a scam email, immediately run your anti-virus software. Anti-virus software can identify and quarantine or delete harmful software before it has a chance to corrupt your PC.
