Credit Nightmares: Do You and Your Spouse Fight About Money?
Posted by: Desiree B. | Jan 03,2008
They say that the number one cause of fights between couples is money. No big surprise. It seems like everyone I know bickers with their loved ones about too many credit card bills and too many unresolved debts. Some tips to move past the arguing if you and your spouse are fighting about money:
Before you get married, learn more about your partner’s attitudes towards debts. This can work a couple of different ways- you want someone who doesn’t have a bunch of unresolved debt but who also isn’t so frugal that you’ll never spend a dime on fun purchases. Make sure you understand how your spouse thinks about finances, including saving money, investing money and spending money before you get married to avoid confusion and fights later on.
The more I read about establishing a credit history, the more I think keeping your finances separate might be the best thing for your marriage. If you divorce, or if your spouse passes away, you want to make sure you have a credit history established. Keep checking accounts and at least one credit card account separate to save on confusion and to make sure that you both have an established credit history.
If you find yourself arguing about money with your spouse, have an open and honest conversation to clear the air. The more you talk about what’s at the root of your money problems, the quicker you can start focusing on what really matters.
