Credit Counseling Tips: Interviewing a Credit Debt Counselor
Posted by: Desiree B. | Dec 23,2007
This week we’ve been talking about best ways to interview a credit debt counselor before you hire a credit counseling firm. Before you agree to work with a credit counselor, make sure that they are reputable. Some questions to ask a credit debt counselor:
Does your credit counseling service receive any kind of funding? Credit debt counseling services that receive funding are more likely to be non-profit, or a “true” credit counseling service.
Who will I work with in your office? It’s ideal to work closely with one credit debt counselor. If you are working with multiple people, they won’t be as familiar with your case, and you’ll spend time going over the basic details every time you talk to them.
What if I can’t afford the repayment plan you design for me? Debt repayment is supposed to be manageable, something that you can afford. If you don’t feel like you can afford the monthly payments that your credit debt counselor designs, find another way to make the plan work for you.
Who can I call if I have problems with lenders or creditors? If you have unpaid debts, and your creditors are being aggressive, a reputable credit counseling service can help act as the middleman. They will work with the credit card companies or lenders on a repayment plan, which should eliminate collections calls.
