Better Business Bureau Warns Public about Homeowners Scam

The Better Business Bureau issued a warning recently to homeowners about some current scams making the rounds. The Better Business Bureau provides unbiased, third party information about companies and charitable organizations. I refer to the Better Business Bureau a lot on the blog, because they’re a reliable source of complaints and information you can use for research before you work with a new company. The Better Business Bureau often issues warnings to the public when they’re hearing a lot about a scam, to help us be better informed and to avoid getting duped:

The Better Business Bureau is seeing a trend in complaints related to asphalt companies. The asphalt companies offer to pave your driveway at a discount, using leftover materials. The complaints center on sub-par workmanship and high pressure sales tactics. A number of complaints received by the Better Business Bureau indicate the asphalt companies have out-of-state license plates and temporary offices. The companies quickly high-tail it out of town when they receive pressure from police. Some tips to avoid being the victim of a homeowner scam:

  • Before you hire any contractor, make sure they are properly licensed, insured and bonded in case any mishaps happen.
  • Look up contractors through the Better Business Bureau and online to see if consumer complaints have been made.
  • Use a service like ContractorCheck to verify that the company is reputable.
If you've been the victim of a homeowner scam, immediately notify police and file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Talking about your experience helps police prosecute scammers and may prevent someone else from getting scammed, too.
