Avoid Credit Nightmares: Options to Help You Pay for Energy Bills
Posted by: Desiree B. | Feb 28,2008
Avoid getting into a credit nightmare as a result of your home or apartment’s energy bills. A lot of people don’t realize that heating bills impact a credit score. Last month CenterPoint Energy, a major provider of natural gas, started reporting delinquent customers to the credit bureaus. Other natural gas providers have started providing information about heating bills to the credit reporting agencies, greatly impacting customers’ credit scores.
Energy Bills Don’t Have to Be Credit Nightmares
Delinquent energy bills don’t have to become a credit nightmare. If your heating bills are in arrears, you can take action to ensure your credit score is protected. Call your natural gas provider to discuss your late payments. They will try to work with you on a payment plan. A popular method of paying natural gas bills is to distribute payments throughout the year.
Most major natural gas companies accept credit card payments. Use a low interest credit card to pay for your heating bill and you might get a bump in your credit score. The credit reporting agencies like to see responsible credit card use in addition to timely payments of all of your household bills.
