More on What You Can Do After an Identity Theft
Posted by: Sally S. | Dec 21,2007
This week we’ve been talking about what you can do after an identity theft has occurred. If you’ve been a victim of identity theft, there is an almost overwhelming amount of administrative tasks that you’ll have to attend to in order to clear your name. But it’s in your best interest to clear your name, and as quickly as possible. Some more tips you can use after identity theft:
If a new bank account was opened in your name or your checks were stolen, you need to report the identity theft to the banks involved. Cancel your bank accounts and open new bank accounts. Put stop payments on any checks that you think may have been stolen. If any merchant refuses to accept a check from you, contact the company that processes their checks to clear up the problem. I know this is all a pain, but it’s a necessity.
More and more I am thinking that it might make sense to hire a private investigator to check into what happened to your identity after it was stolen. It takes a lot of time to clear your good name and the help of a professional might not hurt your efforts. Before you hire anyone to help you, find out if your homeowner’s insurance has a rider for identity theft and what’s covered by the rider. If you aren’t sure, call your insurance agent or your insurance company for more information.
