Marrying for Money: A Not-So-New-Trend Is Back In the News
Posted by: Sally S. | Feb 18,2008
People who marry for money are back in the news this week. Not that this is anything new, not that this is anything unique, but a new crop of wealthy singles' websites and a reality TV show involving a millionaire matchmaker are putting marrying for money back on the map.
Marrying for Money- A Worthwhile Proposition?
People who want to marry for money seem to think it’s a worthwhile proposition. A recent study done by Prince & Associates found that half of men and two-thirds of women surveyed would marry “an average looking person” if they were wealthy. More than 60% of men in their 40’s said they’d jump at the chance to marry a wealthy matron. And 74% of female respondents in their 30’s would be willing to marry for money.
Chickens, Eggs: Which Came First, Money or Love?
In some instances, it can be pretty darn difficult to separate the wealth from the woman- or the man. If someone appears to be marrying for money, they might not think they are getting hitched just for the cold hard cash. People who have a great deal of wealth also tend to have a lot of confidence- an attractive feature to most men and women. If they didn’t have the cash, would they still have the chutzpah? That’s the question often asked by men and women who “marry for money.” It’s difficult to define and can only be answered by the two people involved. And every situation is unique- and maybe a lot less crass than we’re led to believe.
