Identity Theft Victims: More on What to Do After the Crime
Posted by: Sally S. | Dec 19,2007
Yesterday, we talked about what you can do if you are a victim of identity theft. The items included reporting the theft to the credit bureaus, contacting creditors, ordering copies of applications for credit falsely completed using your personal information, monitoring your credit report and filing a police report. Depending upon how bad the identity theft crime was, there are more things you can do to regain your good name when you’ve been a victim:
If, as the result of identity theft, someone has been arrested or had some kind of court judgment against them using your personal information, you can fight back. Contact the courts involved and tell them you’re an identity theft victim. You may have to contact the state department of justice and the FBI if criminal charges were involved.
If someone got a hold of your driver’s license number, and used this as identification (often to pass bad checks), there are a number of things you can do to protect yourself from further victimization. You can put a fraud alert on your driver’s license. You can request a new driver’s license and you can also file a fraud complaint with your local DMV. If someone used your license to obtain a new license out of state, you can follow up with the out of state DMV. Ask your local DMV to help.
We’ll continue with more tips to help you get back on your feet after identity theft tomorrow.
