After Identity Theft: Tips to Regain Your Identity and Move On

After identity theft, it can be tough to regain your good name. We’ve been talking this week about ways to get your identity back after identity theft. The holidays put people especially at risk. If you’ve been a victim, some tips to regain your good name after identity theft:

If you’ve had your debit card stolen, immediately report the theft to your bank. Debit cards are different from credit cards as you can be liable for some fraudulent activity if the theft isn’t reported immediately. Monitor your bank account statement for anything that looks suspicious. Get a new debit card, change your PIN number and change the online account username and passwords associated with your ATM card. As with all PIN numbers and passwords, don’t use word or number combinations that are easy to steal.

If you see charges you don’t recognize on your long distance calling card statement, or if your card was stolen, cancel the card. When you get a new long distance calling card, you can request that a password that you create be used every time the account is accessed or changes are requested.

You may need to get an attorney to help you clear your good name after identity theft. An attorney can help get lenders and creditors to remove fraudulent information from your credit report. Talk to your insurance company to see if your homeowner’s insurance policy has some coverage for legal fees after identity theft.
