After Identity Theft: More on What You Can Do to Regain Your Good Name
Posted by: Sally S. | Dec 20,2007
For the last couple of days, we’ve talked about what you need to do when you’ve been the victim of identity theft. In addition to contacting the courts and filing a complaint with the DMV, there are some more things you can do to regain your good name after an identity theft:
If you suspect that you were the victim of mail fraud, contact the post office. You will need to speak to the local Postal Inspector. If mail was forwarded from your home to another address, the Postal Inspector can help get your mail delivered to you again. Ask him or her about what conversations you need to have with your letter carrier after identity theft.
If your Social Security number was stolen by an identity thief, you may need to change your Social Security number. Contact the local Social Security administration and let them know you’ve been a victim of identity theft. In addition, you should order a copy of your Earnings and Benefit statement to see if there are inaccuracies.
Contact the passport office and let them know you were a victim of identity theft. Include a copy of the police report in your letter and let them know someone else may try to get a passport using your personal information.
