Aaron Spelling’s Dynasty: The Biggest Mansion in Hollywood

Aaron Spelling made a fortune from his many television productions- more than 200 in all. And like any great American fairy tale, when he became a success he spoiled himself and his family with some extravagant purchases. The one that fascinates us the most is that amazing house, known to be the largest single family home in Hollywood.

Aaron Spelling bought Bing Crosby’s former home in 1991. The property included two adjoining lots in addition to the acreage that came with the house. The cost to buy all of the property was $10 million. He then proceeded to tear down the house and to build his dream home. The Spelling mansion measures a whopping 56,500 square feet in the exclusive Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles, California. The total cost for purchasing, demolishing and rebuilding the luxury space was more than $45 million.

And Spelling included every extra he could think of when designing his dream home. The house is designed like a French-Georgian chateau, has 123 rooms and rests on six acres. Its features include a much-discussed gift-wrapping room, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, bowling alley, movie theater, gym, a doll museum and a 6,000 square-foot guesthouse. A citrus orchard provides the family with fresh fruit, and three kitchens, four bars and a designated servants’ wing gives the staff plenty of room to prepare fresh lemonade.

Rumors circulated after Aaron Spelling passed away in 2006 that the home was on the market for $150 million. So, far, it hasn’t happened. The home was a far cry from Spelling’s upbringing, which he said was in a $6,000 home in Texas. It’s the American dream at its excessive best.
