Bad Credit Home Loan

Posted by: Staff Writer | Jul 19,2007

The difference between bad credit and good credit is never more clear than when you try to get some type of loan - noticeably a home loan. If you want to own your own home, bad credit can seem like a millstone around your neck. Can you even get a home loan with bad credit?

Getting a Home Loan

Almost no one has the money to purchase a home outright. Even starter homes and fixer-uppers are inordinately expensive, or at least they seem that way to someone who's used to renting.  And people looking to secure a mortgage on a first home normally have a low income and limited credit history.  Remember, bad credit isn't just about defaulting on loans, but about the length of your credit history.

When you apply for a home loan, credit is everything. When you have bad credit, getting a home loan is much, much harder. You may have to pay more money up front for fees and down payment, or pay very high mortgage rates, just to secure the property. That said, it's not impossible to get a home loan even with bad credit.

Overcoming Bad Credit

When you have bad credit, the rates on your home loan will skyrocket, and suddenly owning your own home doesn't seem as viable as it once did. It is possible to repair bad credit, and there are ways to own a home without having to pay extremely high payments. Here are two ways to overcome bad credit:
  1. Rent to Own: A rent to own property, when you make the monthly payments on time, will help you build up good credit . Once you own your property, you can use this to leverage yourself into a better position on a home loan, and truly get the home of your dreams.
  2. Credit Repair: The building block of all credit is the credit card.  Always make payments on time! Using a credit card and paying it off in a timely fashion builds up your credit, making home loans and other loans more attainable.
